Larry Fellowes [Lewis Stone], a driven publisher, believes his secretary Andrews [Dale Fuller] spends more time shaping his decisions than a wife would, and he convinces author Kate Halsey [Blanche Friderici] to turn this premise into a novel. The idea is provocative, exploring control, affection, and the blurry line between professional proximity and personal desire.
When Andrews learns of Larry’s plan to marry Linda [Natalie Moorhead], she experiences a nervous breakdown because she loves him herself. A new, sharp, and capable secretary, Anne Murdock [Dorothy Mackaill], is then hired while Larry is away on his honeymoon, setting the stage for a collision of loyalties. An unintended love triangle forms as Larry, a workaholic, begins to neglect his wife and become entangled with his new assistant, while Linda also finds herself drawn to another man.
Meanwhile, Linda starts a romance with Jamison [Brooks Benedict], a man she grows to care for, even as Larry and Anne grow closer under the same roof. The affair intensifies as professional collaboration turns into intimate attraction, and the atmosphere becomes charged with scenes that test fidelity and ambition. Eventually, Larry kisses Anne at his apartment, while Linda spends an evening with her young gigolo, Ted O’Hara [Walter Merrill], who even lends her his own apartment key and a late-night farewell.
Linda returns to her husband after her night away, and the couple agrees to go to bed as the night wears on. Anne, meanwhile, watches the unfolding tableau with a heavy heart, deciding to resign the next morning rather than surrender her independence to a ruined relationship. Linda contemplates divorce, while Anne accepts the idea of marrying her long-time admirer Ted O’Hara after she resigns, seeking a new start rather than clinging to a forbidden arrangement.
On the final day of work, Katharine Murdock [Joan Blondell], Anne’s sister, phones the confused Larry and explains everything, clearing the air and steering the story toward a hopeful ending. The film resolves with a sense of closure, as each character faces the consequences of desire, duty, and timing, and the possibilities of fresh beginnings emerge for those who choose honesty over convenience.
