June Cameron, Loretta Young, is the celebrated writer of a feminist book, while medical instructor Dr. Timothy Sterling, Ray Milland, is a cynic with a touch of misogyny. After she badgers him into giving her a lift from the isolated Connecticut hotel where they are staying, a misunderstanding sparks headlines declaring that she has turned her back on her beliefs and married him. Both want to deny it, but her publisher and fiancé convince her that her former stance is ruined and that she must now write a pro-marriage book. Before long, the plan is presented that she can travel to Reno to secure a divorce. Timothy, at first, wants nothing to do with this scheme, until he learns he has been made a professor by his college, a promotion he receives largely because he is now considered a married man rather than a bachelor.
Timothy goes along with the ruse, concealing from June that the arrangement actually benefits him as well, presenting it as a selfless sacrifice for her sake. Complications rise when his long-standing fiancée Marilyn Thomas, Gail Patrick, returns to town and becomes wary of the arrangement. Marilyn’s jealousy grows even as Timothy tries to keep up the act, insisting that his supposed marriage to June is merely a convenience. He attempts to juggle a pretend fiancée and a real one, all the while quietly starting to develop genuine feelings for June. The situation spirals as relationships and loyalties are tested, and the line between sacrifice and self-interest becomes increasingly blurred, leading to a tension-filled navigation of love, commitment, and the absurdities of social expectations.
