In a close circle of friends, Dyan Cannon plays Lorrie Dellman, a woman who conspires with her friends to seduce each of their doctor husbands in a bid to uncover infidelity and reveal hidden tensions. The plan centers on manipulating the trust that binds this group, using flirtation and distraction to shine a light on the secrets each marriage hides. Among the men is Paul McGill George Gaynes, a physician whose marriage and moral balance are pulled into the scheme as the women test the boundaries of fidelity and illusion.
But the scheme spirals out of control the night Lorrie is caught in bed with Paul McGill by her husband, the brain surgeon Dr. Mort Dellman [Gene Hackman], who shoots them both in a shocking instant of rage and betrayal. The immediate aftermath pulls the lives of everyone involved into a crucible of guilt, fear, and questions about loyalty. Dr. Pete Brennan [Richard Crenna] manages to save McGill’s life, yet the price is steep: Lorrie dies, leaving a tangle of broken marriages and unsettled ambitions in its wake.
Pete Brennan, tired of his own precarious relationship at home, is openly fed up with his wife Amy [Janice Rule] and her migraines, and he is also entangled in a clandestine affair with Helen [Diana Sands], a nurse who becomes a focal point in the spiraling drama. Across town, Dr. Dave Randolph [Gene Hackman], a psychiatrist, confronts his own fragile marriage to Della Randolph [Rachel Roberts], who is described as frigid. His professional curiosity deepens as he learns that Della had a lesbian relationship with the late Lorrie, a revelation that casts new light on the personal dynamics at play and adds layers of complexity to the evolving crisis.
Maggie Gray [Cara Williams]—an alcoholic—is found face-down in her swimming pool, discovered by Dr. Joe Gray [Carroll O’Connor], her ex-husband, a moment that serves as another jolt to a community already reeling from tragedy and suspicion. The surreal mix of friendship, jealousy, and tragedy leaves the group marching forward toward Lorrie’s funeral, a somber gathering that becomes a platform for revelations. At the service, Helen reveals that her young son needs a brain operation, raising the stakes and pinpointing Dellman as the surgeon best suited to perform the critical procedure.
Yet Dellman is not available through ordinary channels: he sits in jail for the crime that initiated the chain of events. The district attorney, Douglas [Richard Anderson], agrees to release the surgeon for a few hours to perform the life-saving operation, all under strict police guard. He remains unaware that Dellman has struck a secret arrangement with Lorrie’s wealthy father, Jake Porter [Ralph Bellamy], to help him flee to Mexico as soon as the operation is complete and the danger passes.
As the story unfolds, the intertwined lives of these doctors, spouses, and friends reveal how trust can fracture under pressure, how secrets can bind people in dangerous ways, and how personal ambitions often collide with professional duties. The atmosphere remains tense and morally charged, with each character carrying the weight of the choices they’ve made and the consequences that ripple outward—where the line between healing and harm becomes blurred, and where the pursuit of truth threatens to pull everyone into a more profound and manipulative game. The result is a stark, morally intricate portrait of love, deception, and the high costs of truth in a world where every relationship is tested by the specter of infidelity, obsession, and the desperate need to save a life.
