What's After the Movie
Robert Dean Stockwell was an American actor whose career stretched across seven decades. He began his career as a promising child actor contracted with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, appearing in various major films such as Anchors Aweigh, The Green Years and Gentleman's Agreement. He transitioned into adult roles, with his lead role in the Broadway play Compulsion and its film adaptation earning him acclaim. His portrayal of Edmund Tyrone in the film Long Day's Journey into Night won him two Best Actor Awards at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival. Stockwell continued to gain recognition, earning a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the film adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. His career took a resurgence in the 1980s with his performance in David Lynch's works like Dune and Blue Velvet, and his Academy Award nominated role in Married to the Mob. He also enjoyed a successful television career, particularly in Quantum Leap, and later, Battlestar Galactica. Stockwell retired in 2015 and passed away in 2021.
Stockwell was born into a family of entertainers in Los Angeles and split his childhood between LA and New York City. His father, Harry Stockwell, was an actor who lent his voice to Disney's 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and his brother Guy Stockwell was a television and film actor. He had two children and was married twice, first to Millie Perkins and later to Joy Marchenko. Stockwell was politically active and campaigned for the Democratic Party in the 1992 U.S. Presidential election.
