On the windswept Brittany coast, a young girl named Agnes Larbaud lives with her retired widower father, Frederick Larbaud, and their caretaker, Karen, in an old house that feels both intimate and worn by time. Agnes is immature for her age, kept from school, and living in a secluded, almost childlike world. One day after church, they witness a prison bus crash, and as guards fire on fleeing convicts, one man, Joseph, escapes after injuring a guard.

Agnes discovers him hiding in their shed, and in her vivid imagination she believes she has conjured him into being, a creature belonging to her alone. She keeps him a secret from the authorities, and the family hides him for a while. The gendarme dies, and the police begin to suspect that the family knows more than they admit. During this tense period, the bond between Joseph and Karen deepens, and Agnes catches them kissing, an event that drives Karen away and seeds tension within the household.

Joseph leaves on his own terms, not going with Karen, but Agnes follows him, and he brings her back to their home. A complicated, illicit bond forms, and, as Frederick objects, they leave together for a town. Yet Agnes struggles to manage a household and eventually returns. The police question her about her absence; she remains silent. Then Joseph, following her home, is seen, chased and killed.
