Chief Yowlachie

Chief Yowlachie (born Daniel Simmons on August 15, 1890 on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington) was a prominent Native American actor and bass‑baritone opera singer whose career spanned four decades of film, radio, and stage work. Raised in the Yakama tribe, he attended the Government Indian Trade School where he first encountered formal education before moving to Los Angeles to pursue performing arts. His cinematic debut came in 1925 with the title role of Tonio, Son of the Sierras, launching a brief but prolific silent‑era period in which he appeared in twelve films, eleven of them Westerns. After 1930 he shifted his focus to music, studying opera under the famed tenor Pasquale Amato and performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, on network radio, and at high‑profile events such as the White House concerts for Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt. Yowlachie also sang at the 1928 Pacific Southwest Exposition and the dedication of Griffith Park’s Greek Theatre in 1930, showcasing a rare blend of Native heritage and classical training. He returned to the screen in 1940, becoming a familiar face in more than thirty Westerns and two serials through the mid‑1950s, most memorably portraying Quo in John Ford’s classic Red River (1948) and the legendary Geronimo in the serial Son of Geronimo: Apache Avenger (1952). Despite his musical background, he never sang in his film roles, though his recorded voice was used for a silent‑film prologue in 1926. Television appearances followed, including episodes of The Lone Ranger, The Virginian, and The Tall Man, and he even reprised Geronimo in the syndicated series Stories of the Century. On March 7, 1966, Yowlachie died in Los Angeles after a stroke; his funeral featured an Indian death chant and ritual, and he was interred at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, leaving behind a legacy of cultural representation and artistic versatility.
