Louie Bernard Gorcey is singing the jaunty tune Louie the Lout to the boys in the Sweet Shop, a moment that blends lighthearted charm with an undercurrent of trouble. A horseman arrives on horseback, presenting himself as the sheriff of Hangman’s Hollow, and Louie slips into the back of the shop to hide. The sheriff questions the kids, and they insist they’ve never heard of Louie, so he rides off, leaving a sense of mystery behind.

Louie then unfolds the memory: years ago in Hangman’s Hollow, he and his partner Pete Briggs discovered gold. The story darkens when Blackjack McCoy Norman Willis murders Pete, and Louie is framed for the crime, forcing him to flee to the city. Louie reveals a map tattooed on his back that supposedly marks the treasure’s location, and he asks the boys to help clear his name and ensure Pete’s share goes to his daughter.

Determined to help, the kids head west, hoping to prove Louie’s innocence and secure the inheritance for Pete’s daughter. They copy the tattooed map onto Sach Jones back and press on toward the frontier. Along the road, they’re ambushed by Indians, and Indian Joe Iron Eyes Cody rides back to town to warn Blackjack that the kids are in town.

Gabe Gabriel Dell, whom Slip Mahoney Leo Gorcey sent ahead, uses his card tricks to win Blackjack’s favor and smooth the path for the group. The kids eventually capture Blackjack and force a confession of the murder to the sheriff, raising hopes that the gold and justice might finally be theirs.

But just as the plan seems to succeed, Slip delivers a blow to Sach, waking him up. The twist lands hard: it was all Sach’s dream, a nocturnal glimpse into loyalty, friendship, and the lure—and danger—of the old west.
