Virtual production describes a family of techniques that marry real-time rendering with traditional filmmaking so directors, actors, and crew can see near-final imagery during principal photography. Rather than shooting against blank green screens and deferring decisions to post, productions visualize environments, lighting, and even complex set extensions in-camera, enabling faster iteration and higher confidence on set.

A typical setup combines a game engine for real-time backgrounds, a camera-tracking system that reports position and lens metadata, and a display surface—often an LED volume—synchronized to camera movement. The engine updates parallax and lighting in step with the camera, while the physical set provides interactive foreground elements. Preproduction expands to include worldbuilding, asset readiness, and color pipeline alignment long before day one.
