Neo’s instant transformation from a novice hacker to a martial arts master is a thrilling moment because it is a core, explained rule of the film’s universe.
- The Hidden Backstory Reveal: A common trope in action films where a seemingly ordinary, mild-mannered character is put in a perilous situation and suddenly reveals that they are a former CIA assassin or special forces soldier. This is often played for surprise and comedic effect, as in the film Nobody (2021).
- The Power of Montage: The training montage can sometimes be a condensed version of this trope, where a character becomes a world-class expert in a matter of minutes of screen time, compressing years of hard work into a short, musical sequence.
The Risk of Lazy Storytelling
