Starting Over from the Beginning

A page-one rewrite is the most extensive and drastic form of screenplay revision. It signifies that the producers or studio have decided that the current draft is fundamentally flawed and cannot be fixed with a simple polish or punch-up. Instead, they hire a new writer to go back to the beginning—literally to a blank page one—and rebuild the script from the ground up.

This doesn’t mean every single element of the original is discarded. The new writer is usually working from the same core concept, premise, or underlying intellectual property. They may retain the main characters and some key set-piece ideas. However, they are given the freedom to completely re-imagine the plot, change character motivations, invent new subplots, and write entirely new dialogue. The goal is to create a new, cohesive script that solves the problems of the previous draft while honoring the project’s original intent.

When is a Page-one Rewrite Necessary?

This major step is typically taken for several reasons:

• A Broken Story: The existing script has irreparable structural problems, a weak protagonist, or a tonally inconsistent narrative.
• A New Creative Vision: A new director is attached to the project and wants to bring their own unique take to the material, requiring a new script that aligns with their vision.
• A Shift in Studio Mandate: The studio’s goals for the project have changed. They might decide to lower the budget, change the target rating from R to PG-13, or redevelop the project for a different star, all of which would necessitate a new script.

A page-one rewrite has significant implications for official writing credit as determined by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), as the new writer has contributed a substantial portion of the final screenplay.
