Definition

Spatial computing refers to technologies that sense, model and interact with the three-dimensional world by blending physical and digital objects. It encompasses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and 3D user interfaces, enabling users to manipulate digital artifacts as if they occupied real space.

Historical Evolution

Roots of spatial computing date to 1968 with Ivan Sutherland’s “Sword of Damocles” head-mounted display. In the 1990s, Virtual Fixtures by Louis Rosenberg at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory showcased overlaying computer-generated graphics onto physical tools. Recent advances in computer vision, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and wearable sensors have birthed consumer products like Microsoft HoloLens (2016), Magic Leap One (2018) and ARKit/ARCore on smartphones.
