Spatial computing refers to technologies that sense, model and interact with the three-dimensional world by blending physical and digital objects. It encompasses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and 3D user interfaces, enabling users to manipulate digital artifacts as if they occupied real space.
Roots of spatial computing date to 1968 with Ivan Sutherland’s “Sword of Damocles” head-mounted display. In the 1990s, Virtual Fixtures by Louis Rosenberg at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory showcased overlaying computer-generated graphics onto physical tools. Recent advances in computer vision, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and wearable sensors have birthed consumer products like Microsoft HoloLens (2016), Magic Leap One (2018) and ARKit/ARCore on smartphones.
Spatial computing’s promise lies in frictionless interaction and contextual computing, but challenges persist in improving field-of-view, reducing device weight and ensuring robust mapping in dynamic environments. Addressing privacy and ethical concerns around persistent spatial data collection is also critical as these technologies proliferate.
