Spatial audio is an immersive sound technology that creates a three-dimensional audio experience by placing sounds virtually in space around the listener.
Spatial audio is a sophisticated audio format designed to create a more realistic and immersive listening experience than traditional stereo or surround sound. Its goal is to replicate how we hear sound in the real world. Instead of assigning audio to a fixed number of channels (like left and right in stereo, or the 5.1 channels in surround sound), spatial audio treats sounds as ‘objects’ that can be placed anywhere in a 360-degree sphere around the listener. This creates a sense of depth, distance, and direction, making it feel like the sound is coming from all around you—above, below, behind, and beside.
A key feature of spatial audio, particularly when experienced through headphones from companies like Apple, is dynamic head tracking. Using accelerometers and gyroscopes in the headphones, the device knows the exact orientation of the listener’s head relative to the screen (like an iPhone or iPad). This allows the sound field to remain fixed in place. If a sound is meant to be coming from the screen, and you turn your head to the left, the audio will shift to your right ear, preserving the illusion that the sound is anchored to its virtual location in space. This dynamic element is what elevates the experience from simple surround sound to a truly immersive audio environment.
The two most prominent technologies in this space are Dolby Atmos and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio. While initially a feature for high-end cinema sound systems, spatial audio has become a major feature for music streaming services (Apple Music, Tidal), movie streaming (Netflix, Disney+), and video gaming, where directional audio cues are crucial for gameplay. It aims to deliver a theater-like audio experience through a simple pair of compatible headphones.
