Share Count

The share count is a metric that tracks how many times a piece of content has been shared by users to their own networks, friends, or other platforms.

The Ultimate Endorsement

The share count is one of the most valuable metrics for measuring the impact and resonance of online content. A “share” is an action a user takes to broadcast a piece of content—such as a movie trailer, an article, or an image—to other people. This can take many forms depending on the platform: the Retweet on X, the “Share” button on Facebook (which allows posting to one’s timeline or sending via Messenger), the paper airplane icon on Instagram (for sharing to stories or direct messages), or the share function on TikTok.

Unlike a like, which is a passive and often fleeting interaction, a share is an active and considered endorsement. It signifies that the user found the content so entertaining, informative, or important that they were willing to stake their own social capital on it by recommending it to their friends and followers. For this reason, shares are often considered the most powerful form of engagement and are the primary driver of viral phenomena. When a movie trailer “goes viral,” it’s because it has achieved a massive share count, spreading organically from one user’s network to the next.

Tracking and ‘Dark Social’

For movie marketing teams, the share count is a critical indicator of a campaign’s success. It demonstrates that the promotional material is not only being seen but is also compelling enough to be passed along. A high share count on a movie’s first poster or a featurette about its visual effects translates directly into earned media—a form of free advertising that is often more trusted by consumers because it comes from their peers.

However, accurately tracking the total share count can be challenging. While platforms provide data for on-platform shares, a significant amount of sharing occurs through what is known as “dark social.” This term refers to all the ways people share content privately, such as by copying a link and pasting it into a text message, an email, or a WhatsApp chat. These private shares are incredibly valuable but are difficult for analytics tools to measure, meaning the true viral reach of a piece of content is often even greater than the public-facing metrics suggest.
