A Tool for Authentic Representation

A sensitivity reader is a specialized editor or consultant who reviews a creative work through the lens of their own lived experience and expertise as a member of a particular community or identity group. Their job is not to censor or police content, but to act as an advisory partner to the creator. They are hired to identify potential issues such as harmful stereotypes, inauthentic language, cultural inaccuracies, or misrepresentations that the author, who does not share that same background, may have included unintentionally.

The Role and Process

The process typically involves the sensitivity reader receiving a near-final draft of a script or manuscript. They then read it specifically looking for portrayals related to their area of expertise, which could be:

• Race and ethnicity
• LGBTQ+ identity
• Physical or mental disabilities
• Religious affiliation
• Experiences with trauma or abuse

After their review, they produce a feedback report for the creator. This report highlights specific passages, dialogue, or character arcs that may be problematic and explains why they could be perceived as harmful or inauthentic. The reader may suggest alternative approaches, but the final decision on whether to implement any changes rests entirely with the creator. The ultimate goal is to help creators tell more nuanced, respectful, and believable stories, thereby avoiding unintended harm to both the communities being portrayed and the audience.
