The Hidden Carbon Footprint of Filmmaking

Scope-3 emissions are a specific category within corporate carbon accounting that represents all of the indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company’s value chain but are outside its direct control. For a film production, this category is both the largest component of its carbon footprint and the most difficult to measure and mitigate. Understanding Scope 3 is essential for any meaningful effort toward sustainable production.

Understanding the Three Scopes

The internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol framework divides a company’s emissions into three categories:

• Scope 1 (Direct Emissions): Emissions from sources the production directly owns or controls. Example: Fuel burned by on-set generators or in production-owned vehicles.
• Scope 2 (Indirect - Purchased Energy): Emissions generated off-site to produce the electricity the production consumes. Example: The emissions from the power plant that provides electricity to a soundstage.
• Scope 3 (Indirect - Value Chain): All other indirect emissions. This is a vast category that includes everything from business travel to waste disposal. For a typical blockbuster film, Scope 3 can account for over 80-90% of its total emissions.

Key Scope-3 sources in filmmaking include:

• Air travel for cast and crew.
• Transportation of equipment and materials.
• Emissions from third-party services like catering and VFX vendors.
• The manufacturing of sets and props.

Because these emissions are generated by external partners, accurately tracking and reducing them requires a coordinated effort across the entire production supply chain, representing the next major frontier in Hollywood’s sustainability efforts.
