A New Bar for On-Screen Representation

Inspired by the Bechdel-Wallace Test, which measures female representation, the Riz Test provides a simple, five-question checklist to gauge the quality and depth of Muslim characters in film and television. It was introduced by actor Riz Ahmed in a 2021 speech, developed in collaboration with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Pillars Fund. The test emerged from their joint study, “Missing & Maligned,” which revealed that Muslims are overwhelmingly absent from popular films and are frequently depicted through a narrow, stereotypical lens when they do appear.

The test’s goal is to challenge creators and audiences to move beyond simplistic and often negative portrayals. A film or show is considered to pass the test if the answer to all five of the following questions is ‘no’ regarding its Muslim characters.

The Five Criteria

The test poses five questions about the portrayal of a Muslim character:

  1. Terrorist or Victim? Is the character presented as a perpetrator or victim of terrorism, or is their story framed by the threat of religious extremism?
  2. Irrational or Superstitious? Is the character presented as irrationally angry or superstitious, lacking reason and embodying cultural backwardness?
  3. Oppressive or Misogynistic? Is the character presented as a symbol of misogyny or as being oppressive towards women?
  4. A Threat to the West? Is the character presented as a threat to a Western way of life?
  5. Exotic or Voiceless? If the character is male, is he presented as emasculated? If female, is she presented as exotic, voiceless, or in need of saving by a white protagonist?

Impact and Purpose

The Riz Test serves as a powerful media literacy tool. It gives creators, executives, critics, and viewers a practical framework for identifying harmful tropes. By asking these pointed questions, it aims to encourage the development of more nuanced, authentic, and three-dimensional Muslim characters who are defined by their humanity rather than by a set of stereotypes. It seeks to shift the conversation from mere inclusion to the quality and thoughtfulness of the representation itself.
