Simping

"Simping" is internet slang for showing excessive admiration, devotion, or thirst for another person, often a celebrity or fictional character, in a way that is seen as subservient.

An Expression of Extreme Fandom

The term “simp” originated with negative and often gendered connotations, used to criticize a man for being overly deferential to a woman in the hopes of winning her affection. However, as the word has been absorbed into mainstream internet culture, its meaning has broadened and is now often used in a more ironic, self-aware, and gender-neutral way, especially within fan communities.

In modern fandom, to “simp for” a person or character is to express an intense and often comically exaggerated level of adoration, attraction, or devotion. It’s a way for fans to openly and humorously declare their extreme admiration. A fan might post on social media, “I am simping so hard for Pedro Pascal,” or, in the comments of a Fan TikTok edit of a handsome villain like Kylo Ren, “I can’t believe I’m simping for him.”

This modern usage of the term is less about a literal power dynamic and more about a shared, hyperbolic language for expressing intense celebrity crushes or deep affection for a fictional character. It’s a key part of the vocabulary surrounding thirst traps and the celebration of attractive figures in pop culture.
