The Origin of a Foundational Meme

“Press F to Pay Respects” is the meme that started a cultural phenomenon. The phrase originates from a scene in the 2014 video game Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. During an interactive cutscene at a military funeral, the player’s character approaches the casket of their fallen comrade. At this solemn moment, a large prompt appears on the screen, instructing the player to “Press F” (on PC) to interact with the casket and “Pay Respects.”

The moment was immediately and widely ridiculed by the gaming community. It was seen as a jarring and emotionally tone-deaf example of a forced gameplay mechanic, trivializing a serious moment with a simplistic button prompt. This mockery propelled the phrase into memetic stardom. Screenshots of the prompt became a viral image macro, and the act of “pressing F” became a shorthand, often ironic, way to offer low-effort condolences for any unfortunate situation.
