In the sophisticated world of cinematic lighting, with its massive HMIs, precise Fresnel lenses, and soft LED panels, the ‘potato light’ is the humblest of instruments. The term is a piece of crew slang for a basic, unrefined, and purely functional utility light. It is not a tool for creating mood or beauty; it is a tool for seeing. The name ‘potato’ is a playful jab at its lumpy, simple nature—it often refers to a simple porcelain or plastic socket with a bare incandescent bulb screwed into it, a setup that has a vaguely round, potato-like form and provides a similarly un-artistic quality of light.
A Light for Work, Not for the Camera
A potato light is never used to illuminate the scene being filmed. Its purpose is entirely practical and happens ‘behind the scenes.’ The gaffers and electricians will use these simple, inexpensive lights for a variety of tasks:
- Work Lights: When the crew first arrives at a dark location or soundstage, they will rig a series of potato lights to provide general, ambient illumination so they can safely begin the main load-in and set up the more complex cinematic lighting.
- Safety Lights: They can be placed in dark hallways, stairwells, or equipment storage areas to ensure the crew can navigate the set safely.
- Green Rooms and Holding Areas: A simple potato light might be used to provide basic illumination in the holding area for background actors.
Essentially, a ‘potato light’ is any light source that is being used for its utility rather than its artistry. It is often contrasted with a ‘China Ball’—a paper lantern with a bulb inside—which is also a simple instrument, but one that is frequently used by cinematographers in a shot to create a soft, pleasing, and motivated light source.
