Overview

The CG supervisor manages the technical and artistic aspects of 3D computer graphics (CG) on a production. They design the CG pipeline, ensure asset interoperability, and mentor teams of modelers, riggers, animators and lighters.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Pipeline Development: Establish tools, render farms and version control workflows.
  • Quality Assurance: Review technical tests, shader builds and lighting passes to maintain consistency.
  • Team Leadership: Allocate resources, hire artists and coordinate with the VFX supervisor, production management and client departments.

Collaboration

CG supervisors liaise with editorial for shot sequences, audio for timing cues, and editorial conform to align CG renders with the cut. They also partner with IT to manage storage and compute resources.

They drive adoption of real‑time engines, cloud rendering and procedural techniques, optimizing turnaround and enabling innovative visual effects that enhance storytelling while controlling costs.
