Advocating for the Producer’s Craft

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) is a vital organization in Hollywood, but with a crucial distinction from the DGA or WGA: it is a trade organization, not a collective bargaining labor union. This means the PGA does not negotiate industry-wide contracts for wages and working conditions. Instead, its primary mission is to advocate for the profession of producing, to set and uphold professional standards, and to provide its members with education, mentorship, and networking opportunities. The PGA represents the entire producing team, including producers, executive producers, co-producers, and various other roles across scripted, non-fiction, and animated content.

The Producers Mark Certification (p.g.a.)

One of the PGA’s most significant contributions to the industry is the Producers Mark. This is a certification, represented by the letters p.g.a. after a producer’s name in a film’s credits, which verifies that they performed a substantial portion of the actual producing duties on that motion picture. In an era where the ‘producer’ title can often be given for reasons unrelated to on-the-ground production work (such as financing or securing rights), the Producers Mark is the Guild’s official seal of approval. It is a mark of legitimacy that clarifies for the industry and the public who was truly responsible for guiding a film from concept to completion.

Industry Programs and the PGA Awards

Beyond the Producers Mark, the PGA serves its members and the wider industry through a variety of initiatives. It runs extensive mentorship programs, workshops on emerging technologies, and robust diversity and inclusion programs aimed at creating a more equitable industry. Its annual Produced By Conference is a major industry event that brings together the world’s top producers for panels and discussions. The Guild’s most public-facing event is the annual Producers Guild of America Awards, which honors the best-produced films and television shows of the year. The winner of its top film prize is famously one of the most accurate predictors of the Academy Award for Best Picture.
