This PA is essentially a mobile supply closet and courier, responsible for managing and transporting the myriad of essential items that are too small or too immediate to be handled by the large departmental trucks. The ‘hopper’ part of the name suggests a container or vehicle that is constantly being filled with supplies at one location (like the production office) and emptied at another (the set).

The Contents of the ‘Hopper’

The vehicle of the ‘packing hopper,’ often a minivan or a personal car, becomes a rolling depot for the daily necessities that keep a set functioning. Their inventory is a mix of communication gear, paperwork, and crew support items, including:

• Cases of freshly charged walkie-talkie batteries and surveillance headsets.
• Stacks of the day’s call sheets, script sides, and production reports.
• Craft service supplies like boxes of water bottles, coffee, and snacks.
• Last-minute purchases from office supply or hardware stores.
• Transporting hard drives of footage from the set to the post-production house.

This PA acts as a vital go-between, constantly shuttling resources between the production’s various nerve centers. While the tasks may seem mundane, they are essential. A set without working walkie-talkies or a sufficient supply of water can grind to a halt very quickly.

An Entry-Level Proving Ground

Like the coffee run or the milk run, the role of the ‘packing hopper’ is a classic entry-level job. It is often one of the first significant responsibilities given to a new PA. Success in the role requires a high degree of organization, reliability, punctuality, and good communication skills.
