Mix Minus: Overview
Mix-minus is a routing scheme where a given destination receives a full mix minus that destination’s own input. In film and broadcast, it prevents echo/feedback in comms, IFB (interruptible foldback), and remote interviews. On set, it keeps talent or remote directors from hearing themselves delayed; in post, it stabilizes multi-room review sessions where multiple clients connect via conferencing tools.
Implementation in Production
A production sound mixer or console creates individualized buses: the actor’s earpiece hears program, music, and other voices, but not their own mic; a remote unit hears the mix without its return feed. Latency budgets and sidetone are tuned so users feel natural; too little self-feedback can feel disorienting, while too much causes stammer.
