Windshield

A microphone windshield is a cover used to protect a microphone's sensitive diaphragm from wind noise, which would otherwise ruin an audio recording.


The Battle Against Wind Rumble

Wind is the arch-nemesis of location sound recording. The noise it creates is not the gentle ‘whoosh’ we hear with our ears, but a violent, low-frequency rumbling and popping that occurs when turbulent air hits the microphone’s delicate diaphragm. This pressure overload is so powerful that it can completely obscure dialogue and is virtually impossible to remove in post-production. Even a light breeze that feels pleasant on the skin can be enough to render an audio track unusable. A microphone windshield is not an accessory; it is an essential piece of equipment for any recording done outside of a controlled studio environment.

The primary goal of any wind protection system is to create a pocket of still, calm air around the microphone’s capsule while having the minimum possible effect on the sound quality itself. Different levels of wind require different tools, and a professional sound mixer will have an arsenal of options at their disposal.

Types of Wind Protection

Wind protection comes in several forms, often used in combination to create layers of defense against the elements.

  • Foam Windscreen: This is the most basic form of protection—a simple, acoustically porous foam cover that slips directly over the microphone. It is effective at stopping plosives (the puff of air from ‘p’ and ‘b’ sounds in speech) and can handle very light indoor drafts, such as from an HVAC system. However, it is almost completely ineffective against any real outdoor wind.

  • Blimp / Zeppelin: This is the workhorse of professional wind protection. A ‘blimp’ (a term popularized by manufacturer Rycote) is a hollow, mesh-like cage, often shaped like a zeppelin, that encloses the entire microphone. The microphone itself doesn’t touch the blimp; it’s held suspended inside by an elastic shock mount system. The blimp’s structure deflects the bulk of the wind, creating the crucial zone of still air around the mic capsule. This setup alone is sufficient for recording in light to moderate breezes.

  • Dead Cat / Windjammer: For stronger wind conditions, a final layer is added. A ‘dead cat’ or ‘windjammer’ is a furry, acoustically transparent cover designed to fit snugly over a blimp or, in some cases, a foam windscreen. The long synthetic fur is the first point of contact for the wind. It slows the air down and disperses the energy of the turbulence before it can even reach the hard shell of the blimp underneath. The combination of a blimp and a dead cat is the industry standard for professional outdoor dialogue recording.

Choosing the Right Tool and Its Impact

Selecting the appropriate level of wind protection is a critical on-set decision. Using too little results in unusable audio, while using too much can be cumbersome and may have a minor impact on sound quality. Any physical layer placed between a sound source and the microphone can slightly attenuate high frequencies, potentially making the audio sound a tiny bit less crisp or ‘open’.

However, this is a necessary compromise. A professional sound mixer understands that a recording that is 98% perfect is infinitely better than a recording that is 100% ruined by wind noise. The slight high-frequency loss from a blimp and fur system is a small price to pay for clean, intelligible dialogue, and it can often be compensated for with equalization (EQ) in post-production.
