HDR projection is a cinema projection technology that can display a High Dynamic Range image, offering vastly superior contrast and brightness.


Bringing HDR to the Big Screen

High Dynamic Range (HDR) projection is a significant evolution in cinema technology, designed to overcome the limitations of traditional digital projectors and bring the stunning visual benefits of HDR to the theatrical experience. Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) projectors have a limited contrast ratio, meaning their ability to display deep blacks and bright, detailed highlights simultaneously is restricted. HDR projection systems are engineered to dramatically expand this range.

Key Characteristics

The defining feature of an HDR projector is its ability to achieve an extremely high contrast ratio. This is the difference between the darkest black and the brightest white the projector can produce. While a standard cinema projector might have a contrast ratio of around 2,000:1, a high-end HDR projection system, like the laser-based projectors used in Dolby Cinema, can achieve a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. This results in several key visual improvements:

  • True Blacks: The black parts of the image are truly black, not a milky dark gray. This adds incredible depth and dimension to the picture.
  • Specular Highlights: Bright points of light—like the glint of the sun off a car, a welding spark, or a starfield—are rendered with intense brightness and detail without washing out the rest of the image.
  • Wider Color Gamut: These systems can also reproduce a wider range of colors (typically the full DCI-P3 color space), making the image more vibrant and lifelike.

HDR projection is a cornerstone of premium large formats (PLFs) like Dolby Cinema and select IMAX theaters, offering a visibly superior image quality over standard cinema exhibition.
