Haute couture is a French term that literally translates to “high dressmaking.” It is not merely a descriptive phrase for expensive clothing; it is a legally protected and regulated designation awarded by the French Ministry of Industry. Only a select few fashion houses that meet a strict set of criteria are granted the title of a couture house. These rules require, among other things, that a house design made-to-order clothing for private clients with multiple fittings and present a collection of at least 50 original designs twice a year in Paris.
Haute couture is fashion in its purest, most artistic form. Each garment is a unique piece, crafted by hand from the most exquisite materials by a team of highly skilled artisans. The creation of a single couture gown can take hundreds, or even thousands, of hours of labor.
Couture and the Cinema
While very few people in the world can afford to buy haute couture, its influence is seen in cinema in two key ways:
- The Red Carpet: The most spectacular, avant-garde, and newsworthy creations worn by celebrities at major events like the Met Gala and the Academy Awards are often custom haute couture pieces. These are not just dresses; they are works of art designed to create an unforgettable cultural moment.
- Inspiration for Costume: The painstaking techniques and artistry of the couture atelier are directly mirrored in the costume departments of large-scale period films. The process of creating a historically accurate, hand-sewn gown for a film like Marie Antoinette (2006) or Phantom Thread (2017) is essentially a form of couture.
