DALL·E is a prominent family of generative AI models created by the research and deployment company OpenAI. The name is a portmanteau of the artist Salvador Dalí and the Pixar robot WALL-E, hinting at its surreal artistic capabilities and its robotic nature. DALL·E’s core function is to take a text description, known as a ‘prompt,’ and generate a corresponding image that is entirely new and original.

The Evolution of DALL·E

The DALL·E series has seen rapid and significant advancements, with each version representing a major leap in capability:

• DALL·E (Original): Introduced in January 2021, the first version was a proof of concept that amazed the AI community. It could generate imaginative and often cartoonish images, but they were typically low-resolution and lacked photorealism.
• DALL·E 2: Released in April 2022, DALL·E 2 was a massive improvement. It could generate much higher-resolution, photorealistic images and had a more sophisticated understanding of the relationships between objects and concepts. It also introduced powerful features like ‘inpainting’ (editing a specific part of a generated image) and ‘outpainting’ (extending an image beyond its original borders).
• DALL·E 3: Integrated into ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator in late 2023, DALL·E 3 represented another significant leap, particularly in its ability to understand and adhere to complex and nuanced prompts. It demonstrated a much-improved capacity for rendering text accurately within images and following detailed instructions that previous models struggled with.
