A “challenge” is a viral phenomenon, primarily popularized by platforms like TikTok, where a specific prompt inspires a wave of user-generated content. A challenge is typically tied to a specific audio clip—often a snippet of a song—and a corresponding action, such as a choreographed dance, a lip-sync performance, or a particular joke format. Users create and upload their own take on the trend, aggregated under a specific hashtag, turning it into a massive, participatory cultural moment.

For the film industry, challenges have become an incredibly powerful, if unpredictable, marketing force. They can emerge in two ways:

1. Organic Challenges: Sometimes, a moment from a film spontaneously captures the internet’s imagination and becomes a trend without any studio involvement. The quirky, robotic dance from the 2023 horror film M3GAN became a massive, unplanned viral dance challenge on TikTok, generating enormous organic buzz for the movie. Similarly, the #BirdBoxChallenge, where people attempted tasks while blindfolded like the characters in the Netflix film Bird Box, became a huge—and notoriously dangerous—viral sensation.

2. Studio-Initiated Challenges: Recognizing the power of this format, marketing teams now actively try to create their own challenges. They might partner with major TikTok influencers to launch a branded hashtag and a custom dance routine tied to their film’s theme song. The goal is to kickstart a trend that feels authentic enough for the wider user base to adopt and replicate.

Challenges represent a shift in marketing from a one-way broadcast to a participatory conversation, inviting the audience to become active co-creators of the film’s promotional narrative.
