This character is the underdog, targeted by a bully for their perceived physical weakness, social awkwardness, or otherness. Their plight serves as a powerful and efficient way to establish the social dynamics of a setting and to create immediate emotional stakes. The audience’s sympathy is naturally drawn to this character, making their fate a central concern of the narrative.

The archetype functions as a moral litmus test for the other characters in the story. How they react to the bullying—whether they ignore it, participate in it, or intervene—defines their own character.

The Two Paths of the Bullied

The story of the Bullied Kid typically diverges down one of two profoundly different narrative paths:

1. The Catalyst for Heroism: The mistreatment of the bullied kid often serves as the call to action for the protagonist. A character’s heroic nature is instantly established when they choose to stand up to the bully and defend the victim. This is a foundational element of many superhero origin stories; Peter Parker’s journey as Spider-Man is deeply intertwined with his experiences of being bullied and his failure to protect others.

2. The Villain’s Origin Story: This is the tragic and dark alternative. The relentless trauma, humiliation, and isolation experienced by the bullied kid can become the crucible that forges a villain. Their narrative becomes one of revenge, where they seek to gain power and inflict pain on a world they see as cruel and unjust. Their rage, born from powerlessness, festers and grows into a destructive force. The film Joker (2019) presents an extreme, adult version of this arc, where a lifetime of being marginalized and abused contributes to the creation of a terrifying agent of chaos.
