The Voice of the People

While most film festival awards are decided by a small, select group of industry professionals (the jury), the Audience Award is determined by the most important group of all: the audience itself. After screenings, festival attendees are invited to vote for the film they just saw, usually by casting a ballot or rating it through a digital app. At the festival’s conclusion, the film with the highest average score is crowned the winner.

• Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) People’s Choice Award: This is the most famous and influential audience award. A staggering number of its past winners and runners-up have gone on to be nominated for, or win, the Best Picture Oscar. Winners include Green Book, Nomadland, The King’s Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, La La Land, and American Fiction.

• Sundance Film Festival Audience Award: Winning this award often signals that an independent film has the potential to cross over and achieve mainstream success. The 2021 winner, CODA, famously went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, a rare feat for a Sundance film.

For a film’s distributor, winning a major audience award is a marketing goldmine. The phrase “Winner of the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival” becomes a central part of the film’s trailer and poster, serving as a powerful endorsement that tells the general public, “This is a movie you will love.”
