The Function of Each Act Summary

Act I Summary (The Setup): This summary covers roughly the first 20-25% of the story. Its purpose is to introduce the protagonist and their ordinary world, establish the stakes and themes, and define the character’s core flaw or need. The summary of Act I always culminates with the inciting incident and the first act break, the moment the protagonist is irrevocably propelled into the story’s central conflict.

Act II Summary (The Confrontation): This summary covers the long middle section of the film. It describes the rising action, where the protagonist, now in a new world or situation, faces a series of escalating obstacles. This summary details the subplots and new characters introduced, the protagonist’s attempts to solve their problem, and key turning points like the midpoint. The Act II summary ends with the second act break, a low point where all seems lost for the protagonist, setting the stage for the final act.
