Act One

The Setup

In the classical three-act structure of narrative filmmaking, Act One serves as the story’s setup. Typically comprising the first 20-30 minutes of a feature film (or the first 25-30 pages of a standard screenplay), its primary function is to orient the audience. It must efficiently and engagingly introduce all the essential elements the viewer needs to understand the story that is about to unfold.

The key responsibilities of Act One are:

1. Introduce the Protagonist: The audience meets the main character and sees them in their “ordinary world.” We learn about their personality, their flaws, their goals, and their daily life before the story’s primary conflict begins.
2. Establish the World and Tone: Act One sets the rules of the film’s universe. It establishes the genre (comedy, horror, sci-fi), the setting, and the overall tone (lighthearted, gritty, suspenseful). It answers the question: “What kind of story are we watching?”
3. Present the Inciting Incident: This is the most crucial event of Act One. It is the moment that disrupts the protagonist’s ordinary world and thrusts them into the central conflict of the story. This event, often called the “call to adventure,” provides the protagonist with a goal or a problem that will drive the rest of the narrative.
4. The First Turning Point: Act One typically concludes with a major decision or event, often called the “first act break.” This is the moment the protagonist commits to the journey, leaving their ordinary world behind and crossing a point of no return. This decision propels the story into Act Two.

Example: Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Act One of Star Wars perfectly illustrates these principles. We meet Luke Skywalker, a farm boy living a boring life on the desert planet of Tatooine (his ordinary world). The tone of a grand space opera is set. The inciting incident occurs when Luke discovers Princess Leia’s holographic message hidden within R2-D2. The first turning point is when Luke returns home to find his aunt and an uncle murdered by Stormtroopers, leaving him with no choice but to accept Obi-Wan Kenobi’s call to adventure and leave Tatooine.
