The Daikichiyama Middle School concert band, led by euphonist Kumiko Ōmae Tomoyo Kurosawa and trumpeter Reina Kōsaka Chika Anzai, faces a rocky start when their recent competition earns a dud gold. Kumiko Ōmae’s blunt remark about not being able to win sows a rift with Reina Kōsaka, setting the stage for a tense and emotional season as they move forward with fresh ambitions and uncertain loyalties.

Now in their first year at Kitauji High School, Kumiko Ōmae Tomoyo Kurosawa discovers that the school’s concert band is out of tune with its potential. She befriends Hazuki Katō Ayaka Asai and Sapphire Kawashima Moe Toyota, and the trio visits the band to get a sense of its culture, its struggles, and the personalities within. Kumiko is surprised to see Reina Kōsaka Chika Anzai arriving at the same school and choosing to join the band, signaling a complicated reunion and a test for everyone as they begin to navigate a shared environment.

With Kumiko now stepping into the role of euphonist, the band meets their new advisor, Noboru Taki Takahiro Sakurai. The goal for the year becomes clear: win the national band competition. Yet their first ensemble practice falls short, leaving the ensemble unsettled and prompting Mr. Taki to rethink their plan to perform at the Sunrise Festival. Undeterred, he sets up a schedule of intensive practices, pushing the musicians to refine their sound and cohesion. Over time, his guidance begins to pay off, and he becomes determined to help them present their best at the Sunrise Festival, where their marching performance of the piece Rydeen draws the attention of spectators and hints at their latent potential.

An audition is announced for a 55-member band, a pivotal moment that tests every player’s resolve. Hazuki Katō Ayaka Asai experiences heartbreak at the Agata Festival when she confesses to Shuuichi Tsukamoto Haruki Ishiya and is turned down. Meanwhile, Kumiko Ōmae and Reina Kōsaka Chika Anzai perform together, rekindling their earlier friendship as they play Ai o Mitsuketa Basho, a moment that underscores the complexities of their relationship and the emotional stakes moving forward.

After the auditions, the lineup for the competition is announced. Reina is selected to perform a solo piece, replacing Kaori Nakaseko Minori Chihara. Kumiko’s frustration boils over, and she goes home emotionally spent. The next day, she finds encouragement from Mr. Taki, who urges her to keep practicing and to trust in her own abilities. This exchange marks a turning point in her confidence, pushing her to push through the setback rather than surrender to doubt.

The Kansai Band Competition Preliminary arrives, and the Kitauji High School Concert Band takes the stage with renewed focus. They perform Crescent Moon Dance, a piece that showcases their growing unity and technical refinement.
