What Is Of Fathers and Sons About?

The premise of Of Fathers and Sons in 300 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the war-scarred landscape near the front lines of the Syrian Civil War, filmmaker Talal Derki embarks on an extraordinary undertaking, gaining unprecedented access to a family living under the strict ideology of a militant faction. Posing as a sympathetic observer, he settles into their home, spending years documenting their daily rhythms in a world where extremist beliefs shape every decision, from education to play. The result is an intimate, observational portrait that trades sensationalism for the quiet, unsettling texture of life steeped in radical conviction.

At the heart of the household stands Abu Osama, a fiercely devoted patriarch whose worldview blends religious fervor with the brutal realities of armed conflict. His ambitions extend beyond his own family, reaching toward the dream of a restored Islamic caliphate, and he raises his children according to these unyielding principles. The home becomes a microcosm of a larger ideological movement, where the names given to the children and the lessons imparted carry the weight of a cause much bigger than any individual life.

Among his sons, thirteen-year-old Osama and his younger brother Ayman begin to grapple with the tensions of growing up under such intense expectations. Where Osama embraces the mantle placed upon him with growing seriousness, Ayman hints at quieter longings that pull against the family’s rigid path. Their sibling bond, framed by shared indoctrination yet diverging temperaments, anchors the film’s emotional core, offering a window into how childhood innocence collides with adult certainties.

Told with the patience of a vérité documentary, the film observes these lives without judgment, inviting viewers to sit inside a household where ideology is inherited, debated, and tested. It is a story about the gravitational pull of family, the seductive power of belief, and the fragile, uncertain futures of children shaped by forces far larger than themselves.

Spoilers ahead

Disguised as a photojournalist sympathetic to Salafi jihadism, Talal Derki gains access to a village controlled by the al-Nusra Front during the Syrian Civil War. While there, he documents the life of the Abu Osama family. The patriarch, Abu Osama, is a devoted fanatic who openly admires the September 11 attacks and has named his children after leaders of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Working as both a sniper and a mine remover, he removes his children from school to avoid coeducation, leading his eldest son, Osama Osama, to become increasingly aggressive.

The family’s life takes a turn when Abu Osama loses his lower leg to a mine during a mission. Soon after, the children are sent to a radical military training camp where they endure harsh conditions and struggle with homesickness. Following a Russian airstrike that destroys his cherished books, Abu Osama sustains himself by selling components from disarmed mines to bombmakers. Despite these hardships, he remains convinced that the conflict is a precursor to an apocalyptic Third World War between a revived Caliphate and the Christian world.

As time passes, the brothers diverge in their paths. Osama Osama excels at the camp and receives specialized training in firearms from his father, while his younger brother, Ayman Osama, struggles with the military lifestyle and expresses a desire to return to school. After three years of intense indoctrination, Osama is sent to the front lines. As Derki returns to Berlin, he reflects on the deep devastation of Syria and the separate lives now led by Ayman and Osama.
