Twenty-seven years after their initial victory, Pennywise resurfaces to bring terror back to Derry, Maine. This horrifying return is triggered by the vicious assault on Adrian Mellon, a man wrongly targeted by homophobic teens alongside his boyfriend. As the last resident of Derry among the Losers Club, Mike Hanlon takes it upon himself to gather the group from their disparate lives around the globe. Members, including Bill Denbrough, Ben Hanscom, Beverly Marsh, Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, and Stanley Uris, are called back home, though not without the grim news of one member’s tragic departure.

Upon returning, Mike works to refresh their memories of the past, which intensifies their anxiety. The group is shaken by the news of Stanley’s suicide, a stark reminder of their unfinished business. Initially reluctant, Richie and Eddie are forced to reconsider their stance after Beverly shares her foreboding visions of doom that loom over them.

In a disturbing turn, Pennywise sets its sights on a young girl bearing a facial birthmark, luring her to her demise during a harmless baseball game. As the tension escalates, Mike reveals the Native American legend of the “Ritual of Chüd,” which may hold the key to defeating their nemesis using treasured artifacts from their past. Bill embarks on a self-discovery quest, uncovering a cherished paper sailboat that reminds him of simpler times.

Beverly’s unsettling visions manifest when she confronts Pennywise in the guise of a grotesque elderly woman while searching for a long-lost love letter from her childhood home. Meanwhile, Richie grapples with his repressed emotions as he faces the clown in an abandoned cinema. Ben returns to the haunted locations of their youth, while Eddie finds courage to retrieve a vital inhaler from an old pharmacy.

The sinister presence of Henry Bowers also returns, unleashed from a mental institution by Pennywise’s dark influence. He wreaks havoc at the Losers’ hotel, targeting Eddie before heading to the library to confront Mike. Richie’s determination is put to the test when he encounters Pennywise again at a carnival, where the life of a young boy hangs in the balance.

These ominous encounters pile on the pressure, especially for Bill, who is devastated after failing to save the boy from Pennywise. He is enveloped in despair as he travels to the infamous Neibolt House, where the rest of the Losers gather to provide support and strength for this harrowing battle. As the fog of forgotten memories lifts, the group dives into the eerie sewers beneath Derry, with Mike carrying a tangible reminder of their dark past—a scarred rock from their encounters with the Bowers Gang. They engage in a ritual at the site of the meteor that gave birth to Pennywise, attempting to harness cosmic powers to defeat the monstrous hybrid that has re-emerged. However, the ritual falters as Pennywise rears its head, and Mike is forced to confront a painful truth: their reckless attempt has cost innocent lives.

In the face of Pennywise’s vengeance, each Loser is thrust into their own hallucinatory nightmare. Bill, Ben, and Beverly must face their worst fears, while Richie is rendered paralyzed by the clown’s malice. In a heroic act, Eddie sacrifices himself to save Richie, stalling Pennywise’s relentless pursuit just long enough to reveal how he once subdued the creature by choking its avatar, the Leper.

As they part ways, the Losers embark on new journeys. Ben and Beverly exchange vows, Richie returns to a sentimental spot where he carved initials with Eddie, Mike leaves behind the ghosts of his childhood, and Bill begins to write anew, drawing from the strength forged in their shared struggles.

In a touching revelation, Mike informs Bill that Stanley, their enigmatic friend, composed the letters before his tragic end. Filled with fear yet unwavering, those letters became a source of courage for his friends, reinforcing their bond in the face of unspeakable horrors.
