Halo 1996

The film opens with a school scene where a frazzled nun-teacher, played by Mehr Vakil, sighs at the ringing bell that marks the end of classes and the start of summer vacation. The spotlight then shifts to Sasha, a motherless child who longs for a mother’s love even as her doting father, Mr. Deshpande, a criminal lawyer, tries to fill that gap in her life. Her friend Thomas has left for London to undergo a surgery, leaving Sasha to navigate the long break mostly on her own.

During the holiday, while other kids sprint outside to play, Sasha sits alone, not finding an appetite for meals. A servant spins a tale of a miracle in the form of a halo, and soon a street dog appears, which Sasha takes as the God-sent halo she has been imagining. She adopts the dog and names him Halo, and life for Sasha begins to revolve around this new companion. She begins to sleep, drink, and eat in close companionship with Halo, and her father, though he doesn’t share her fondness for dogs, does not object to the dog’s presence. He follows Gandhian principles, even observing a fast at one point, adding a quiet layer of moral contemplation to the family’s routine.

Halo’s disappearance becomes a turning point. Sasha searches tirelessly inside and outside, driven by the bond she has formed with her canine friend. Her first instinct is to seek help from the city’s police, including a police commissioner who, in a bid to stage a crackdown on crime, tries to enlist Sasha in a plan to nab a gang of smugglers led by Smuggler Raja. Yet the girl’s courage and ingenuity sidestep manipulation, and the real credit for the takedown ultimately belongs to her. Along the way, she receives support from Ranga, a benevolent leader of a group of street urchins, who offers companionship and courage.

The mystery of Halo deepens when the dog is found safe in the care of an elderly couple, Dr. B. M. Banerji and Mrs. Banerji, who look after their physically disabled grandson Abdul. This reunion of Sasha with Halo unfolds with a tender sense of community and responsibility, bridging gaps between a lonely child, a devoted father, and a family that welcomes a new member into their circle. In the film’s closing moments, Sasha makes a heartfelt decision: she hands Halo over to Abdul, choosing to share the love she found with someone who can nurture it in a different home.
