A Very Private Affair 1962

Jill Brigitte Bardot is an 18-year-old Frenchwoman from an affluent background who lives with her widowed mother in a luxurious villa on Lake Geneva and trains in Paris, studying ballet alongside her close friend Carla Ursula Vian-Kübler. Though she dates her ballet instructor Dick Dirk Sanders, her heart secretly longs for the older Fabio Rinaldi Marcello Mastroianni, an Italian magazine editor and theater director who is married to Carla. Driven by unrequited love, Jill moves to Paris with Dick, despite her mother’s protests, and sets out to become a professional ballerina. Yet the grind of rehearsals and the shifting tides of affection soon dull her spark; she grows bored with Dick and ballet, and even experiments with modeling to earn money.

After being discovered by film producer Maxime Paul Sorèze, Jill enters the world of cinema. In a few short years she becomes a global sex symbol, but fame brings relentless media scrutiny over her many affairs and a perpetual paparazzi chase. While attending a premiere at Maxime’s insistence, Jill endures a nervous breakdown as she’s mobbed by fans and photographers. She is admitted to a clinic and soon travels in secret to Geneva with her doctor, Juliette Jacqueline Doyen, to stay at her mother’s villa, though she’s not actually home. There she seeks Fabio, who accompanies her back to the villa and reveals that he has divorced Carla. They slip inside using a spare key, but outside a horde of paparazzi tipped off by Juliette surrounds the estate, distressing Jill.

The next day, Fabio smuggles Jill out of the villa and into his apartment. While he’s at work, she attempts suicide by drowning herself in his bathtub, but he arrives just in time to rescue her and nurse her back to health. Their relationship deepens as they hide away in Fabio’s apartment, until he leaves for Spoleto, Italy, where he’s directing an open‑air production of Heinrich von Kleist’s Das Käthchen von Heilbronn for the arts festival. In the meantime, Jill stays with her mother at the villa, which remains encircled by paparazzi. Maxime visits again, pressing her to return to Paris, but when she declares she wants to quit acting, he threatens to sue her for breach of contract.

Evading the relentless press, Jill travels to Spoleto and rejoins Fabio, delighted to be with him away from the glare—at first, she is not recognized in public, until a close friend named Alain Antoine Roblot, a paparazzo, prints a photo of Jill with Fabio in the newspaper. Rehearsals for the play are soon unsettled by crowds and cameras, prompting Fabio to ask Jill to stay in his hotel room. He grows determined to protect her, ejecting Alain and his friends while they keep her company, and Alain and his colleagues respond by mounting rooftop chases for more shots.

Fabio then moves Jill to a higher room in the hotel, but she grows increasingly frustrated by having to stay isolated. On opening night, Fabio discourages her from attending the performance, fearing a sensational uproar, and she accuses him of holding her captive. He later calls and pleads with her to come to the premiere, but she refuses. Desperate to glimpse the show, Jill climbs out onto the hotel rooftop where Alain captures her with his camera. The flash startles her, and she loses her balance, falling to her death with a serene, almost peaceful expression.
