Luther Sledge [James Garner] is a wanted outlaw who slips away to visit his prostitute girlfriend, Ria [Laura Antonelli], but an impulsive poker game ends in murder as one of his gang is shot. Sledge calmly exacts revenge on the murderers, and an old man [John Marley] who witnessed the scene begins to follow him. In a tense confrontation, Sledge waylays the old man, who then shares a tale of a periodic gold shipment that is fiercely guarded by forty riders, though the trail culminates at a prison where the old man spent years behind bars. What follows is not merely a plan for treasure, but a test of loyalties, nerves, and a willingness to bend the rules when the stakes are this high.

Sledge consolidates his regular gang, assembling Joyce [Franco Giornelli], Bice [Bruno Corazzari], Guthrie [Lorenzo Piani], Beetle [Mario Valgoi], and Hooker to investigate and prepare for the audacious heist. The idea is audacious enough to require perfect timing: observe the gold guards, study their defenses, and decide whether to seize the prize by force or through clever manipulation. Yet when the local sheriff Ripley [Wayde Preston] spots the old man from the prison, a rapid-fire showdown erupts and Sledge’s crew must make a quick exit. The pursuit tests the group’s cohesion, and the plan becomes more urgent as they realize the guard’s vigilance will not be easily outmatched.

With the clock ticking, the gang begins a patient watch of the operation, testing the guards’ routines and the security of the prize. The group resolves to penetrate the prison itself, release the prisoners, and unleash chaos that will expose the guards’ weaknesses. Sledge is ultimately captured and taken to the prison by Ward [Dennis Weaver], who poses as a US Marshal to secure a night-long stay. The warden [Riccardo Garrone] is wary of incarcerating Sledge, arguing that this is a matter for the sheriff, but the sheriff’s arrival later in the night forces the warden to concede. What follows is a brutal sequence of lockups, escapes, and calculated violence as Sledge and Ward, backed by the freed prisoners, overpower the warden and claim the prison as their domain for the moment.

Keys are seized, the remaining prisoners are freed, and the group overruns the interior, detonating the prison gate to throw the town into uproar. The gold sits in a safe within a cell, a fact only the warden knows, and Sledge imagines a way to exploit that knowledge to maximize the take. He places the old man in a cell adjacent to the safe, letting years of hearing the safe being opened guide Bice through the combination. The arrival of the gold guards is swift and brutal, and Ward falls in the ensuing clash while the sheriff returns to face Sledge in a dangerous, high-stakes pursuit that ends with the sheriff’s death in a running, horseback rifle-fight.

The gang escapes with their spoils, only to pause and split the loot, with Sledge pulling a double share that the old man openly notes. A musical montage of poker hands suggests the old man’s ongoing, quiet mastery of the odds, as he seems to accumulate a fortune from the other outlaws’ gold. When the old man plays against Joyce, it becomes clear that he has been cheated with sand substituted for gold dust, and he kills Joyce in a swift, decisive moment. Guthrie objects to the old man’s ruthlessness, and leaves in a huff after Sledge defends the elder outlaw’s actions. Yet Sledge presses on, winning the old man’s gold at poker and most of the gang’s as well, all while the crew’s whispers hint at growing unrest beneath the surface.

The pursuit then veers toward a desperate kidnapping plot as the old man proposes they seize Ria to ensure Sledge can’t walk away with all the gold. They trail Sledge to a Spanish Mission town that has emptied out for a local festival, where the old man takes charge of negotiations as the others lurk, ready to strike if needed. Sledge is wounded in a clash with a bushwhacker (the scene notes Kehoe), but he continues to resist any bargain. It’s revealed that Ria has been kidnapped and badly hurt by Bice, whose brutal action is implied to be a rape and beating, heightening the peril for everyone involved. Hooker, revolted by this, vows to kill Bice once they secure the gold.

As the screams echo through the town, Sledge abandons the gold to rush to Ria’s side. She utters that they didn’t need the gold to be happy and, with her dying breath, warns that Bice is waiting behind him with a rifle. In a final, tragic confrontation, Sledge tears through the danger and kills Bice, then Hooker, and wounds the escaping old man, who tries to threaten that the gold is hidden beyond reach without him. Remembering Ria’s words, Sledge shoots the old man, ending the scheme and riding away empty-handed as the town begins to fill once more with its residents, leaving behind a wake of shattered loyalties and a costly, unresolved treasure.
