Born in Pula, then part of the Kingdom of Italy and now in Croatia, she spent her early childhood in refugee camps after her family fled the turmoil of post‑war Yugoslavia before finally settling in Naples, where her father worked as a hospital administrator. Mathematics fascinated her as a girl, yet she was steered toward gymnastics by her parents who hoped the discipline would grant her grace. She excelled in rhythmic gymnastics, later graduating as a gymnastics instructor and moving to Rome, where she taught physical education at a secondary school.
