Massimo Girotti (18 May 1918 – 5 January 2003) was a prolific Italian film actor whose career spanned more than seven decades, making him a cornerstone of both classic Italian cinema and the early neorealist movement. Born in Mogliano, in the province of Macerata, he cultivated an athletic physique through swimming and polo while initially studying engineering, a background that contributed to his commanding screen presence. His first screen appearance came in 1939 with a small part in Mario Soldati’s Dora Nelson, but it was his collaborations with Alessandro Blasetti (La corona di ferro, 1941) and Roberto Rossellini (Un pilota ritorna, 1942) that announced him as a serious talent. The turning point arrived in 1943 when Luchino Visconti cast him opposite Clara Calamai in Ossessione, a film often cited as the birth of Italian neorealism, where Girotti’s nuanced portrayal of Gino Costa earned critical acclaim. After World II he continued to shape the new cinematic language, starring in Giuseppe De Santis’s Caccia tragica (1946) and Pietro Germi’s In nome della legge (1949). In 1950 he worked with Michelangelo Antonioni on Cronaca di un amore, further cementing his reputation for sophisticated, introspective roles. The mid‑1950s saw him in Visconti’s Senso (1954), widely regarded as his finest performance, and in the epic Sins of Rome (1953) as Spartacus. A resurgence came in 1968 with Pasolini’s Teorema, where he played the bewildered father, followed by the role of Creonte in Pasolini’s Medea (1969). Girotti’s versatility allowed him to appear in a horror film (Baron Blood, 1972), in Joseph Losey’s Monsieur Klein (1976), and in Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial Last Tango in Paris (1972). He remained active into the 1990s, featuring in Roberto Benigni’s Il mostro (1994) and concluding his career with Ferzan Özpetek’s La Finestra di fronte (2003), released shortly after his death from a heart attack in Rome. Throughout his life he was married to Marcella Girotti; no children have been recorded.
