Tamao Nakamura (born July 12, 1939 in Kyoto, Japan) is a celebrated Japanese actress whose career spans more than seven decades, beginning with her discovery as a junior‑high student by director Teruo Ogiyama. She made her film debut in Kageko to Yukie and shortly thereafter signed a contract with Daiei Film in 1954, launching a prolific era that saw her appear in classic titles such as Zenigata Heiji: Ghost Lord (1954), The Loyal 47 Ronin (1958), and the internationally acclaimed The Human Condition (1961). Known for her versatility, Nakamura excelled in period dramas, samurai epics, and contemporary thrillers, delivering memorable performances in Satan's Sword (1960) and Ten Dark Women (1961). Her on‑screen presence was complemented by strong ties to the traditional Kabuki world; she is the daughter of the famed Kabuki actor Nakamura Ganjirō II, linking her to a lineage that includes great‑grandfather Nakamura Kanjaku III and older brother Sakata Tōjūrō IV.

Beyond film, Nakamura's television work has left an indelible mark, with notable roles in series such as Shin Heike Monogatari (1972) and the long‑running Abarenbō Shōgun, where she repeatedly portrayed the mother of the titular shōgun. In her personal life, she married legendary actor Shintaro Katsu in 1962, a partnership that endured until his death in 1997.
