Steve Forrest (born William Forrest Andrews, 23 September 1925 – 18 May 2013) was an American film and television actor whose career spanned more than five decades, earning him a reputation as a reliable leading man and character actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up during the Great Depression and later served in the United States Army Air Forces during World II, an experience that informed his disciplined work ethic on set. After the war he studied acting at the Actors Studio in New York, where he honed the method techniques that would define his early performances. Forrest made his screen debut in the early 1950s with a small part in the western series Maverick and quickly attracted attention for his tall, handsome presence and natural charisma. His breakthrough came in 1955 when he starred opposite Natalie Wood in the critically acclaimed drama The Long, Hot Summer, a role that showcased his ability to convey both strength and vulnerability. Throughout the 1960s he became a familiar face in both cinematic releases and television, appearing in such classics as The Great Escape (1963) alongside Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough, and leading the hit series The Deputy where his portrayal of Deputy Sam Morgan earned him a loyal fan base. Forrest's versatile talent allowed him to transition seamlessly from intense war epics to light‑hearted comedies, including a memorable turn in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and a guest spot on The Love Boat. Off screen, Forrest married actress Christine Carretas in 1975, and the couple raised two children, a son and a daughter, who both pursued artistic careers of their own.
