In 1928, R. J. Gordon dies in a practice run before he can drive his new race car in the grueling Trans-African Auto Race across the Sahara. To save her father’s dream and win the prize money, Gordon’s daughter, Dale, devises a bold plan: she will climb into the driver’s seat herself, disguising as a man with the help of her father’s friends and take his place at the start.
Dale is an exceptionally skilled and determined driver who quickly proves she belongs among the male contenders. Right after the race begins, she sheds her hat and mustache, revealing to the other racers that she is a woman, a disclosure that changes the dynamic of the competition. The journey takes them across scorching sands and remote outposts, and a shortcut Dale chooses brings her perilously close to a tribal war between Bedouin factions. The German racer Von Glessing also takes the same shortcut, pursuing weapons for the warlord behind the clashes, which heightens the danger and the stakes for everyone involved.
Dale’s peril escalates when she and her crew are captured by Rasoul, the uncle of Sheikh Ahmed Al Jaffar. Rasoul holds them, but a rescue comes at dawn in the form of Jaffar, a noble leader who has long admired Dale from afar. He arrives, claims Dale as his bride, and frees her, sparking a difficult alliance built on mutual interest and growing affection. Dale and Jaffar marry, and the next morning she escapes in her car to press on with the race, determined to finish what she started.
Their path to the finish line is derailed again when Dale is captured by the warlord’s ally, Beg, a fierce tribal leader who stands between her and victory. A stowaway gypsy child races back to Jaffar with news of the capture, fueling a desperate bid to save Dale. In the midst of this, Dale is thrown into a pit of leopards, a brutal test that she endures with stubborn courage and the support of Jaffar’s loyal men.
Fueled by resolve, Jaffar rallies his troops and launches a daring rescue, freeing Dale and giving her another chance to race. With the desert wind in their favor, Dale returns to the course, driving with renewed focus and skill. In a tense finish, she crosses the line first, securing the prize and the satisfaction of proving a woman’s rightful place in a male-dominated arena. The celebration is tempered by a quiet recognition of what she has gained: a partnership with Jaffar. As the parade ends, she notices Jaffar’s horse nearby, and with a final nod to the man who changed her fate, Dale mounts the horse and rides home to be with him.
