Sergei Leonidovich Garmash, born on 1 September 1958 in Kherson of the former Ukrainian SSR, emerged from a modest working‑class family to become one of Russia’s most respected screen and stage actors. His early years were marked by disciplinary troubles and an initial fascination with a nautical career, but a decisive turn toward the performing arts led him to a puppet‑theater program in Dnepropetrovsk, where he graduated and toured rural villages as a traveling artist. After completing mandatory service in a Soviet army building battalion, Garmash relocated to Moscow in 1980, gaining admission to the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre School and finishing his studies in 1984 under the guidance of I. M. Tarhanov. His professional debut arrived that same year with the role of Urin in Alexei Simonov’s “Detachment,” launching a prolific filmography that would soon exceed fifty titles. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he appeared in notable works such as “Wild Pigeon,” “Ivan the Great,” “Stalingrad,” and the cult classic “The Master and Margarita,” establishing a reputation for portraying gritty, authoritative figures. The turn of the millennium brought critical acclaim when he received both the Nika Award and the Golden Eagle for his performance as Semen Bespalchikov in Sergei Solovyov’s “Tender Age,” a recognition he would repeat for later roles in “My Half‑Brother Frankenstein,” “12,” and “Home.” In addition to his cinematic successes, Garmash became a familiar face on Russian television, notably as Major Korotkov in the long‑running detective series “Kamenskaya.” His versatility extends to voice work, historical epics such as “Katyn,” and contemporary comedies like “Stilyagi” and “Lucky Trouble.” Off‑screen, he shares his life with actress Inna Timofeeva, a fellow graduate of the Moscow Art Theatre School, and continues to contribute to Russian culture as a People’s Artist of Russia and occasional film festival juror.
