Vyacheslav “Slava” Kolotilov, Konstantin Khabenskiy, is a natural science teacher from the coastal Caspian village of Palchiki, trying to carve out a life as a novelist in Moscow. While deep in thought, he steps into traffic and is hit by a speeding car driven by Nadezhda, Milla Jovovich, who is there with her fiancé Danil, Ivan Urgant. Slava survives with a broken leg, and a surprising romance sparks between him and Nadezhda.

With the accident, Slava convinces Nadezhda to break off her engagement and marry him. He decides to move to Moscow for the wedding. But on the very day he is due to board a train, preparations for the Russian Youth Football Cup are underway, creating a chaotic backdrop. The Tournament Supervisor, Vladimir Menshov, a Duma deputy, spots Slava and confiscates his passport, trapping him in the city.

Desperate to leave, Slava seeks a way out and receives advice from Khlybustin, Sergey Garmash, a coach in Central Moscow, who suggests he arrange for his team to lose. To put together a team, Slava recruits a small group of juvenile delinquents, after catching one trying to steal his phone. The plan is risky and unconventional, since the coach wants the opposite of what Slava hopes to achieve.

Despite initial doubts, the unlikely recruits begin to show an unexpected aptitude for football. Under Slava’s patient guidance, they start to win matches brilliantly, turning the Cup’s expectations upside down and provoking Khlybustin’s frustration. The rickety alliance between a would-be novelist and a band of streetwise teens becomes the beating heart of the story, blending humor with a sense of redemption as the characters chase both victory on the field and a chance at a future beyond their circumstances.

As the football drama unfolds, Slava’s personal stakes rise: his relationship with Nadezhda, his ambition to become a published writer, and the looming question of whether he can reconcile his dream with the new, faster pace of life in Moscow. The film uses sports to explore themes of mentorship, ambition, and the uneasy line between luck and skill, delivering a warm, character-driven narrative that stays grounded in everyday realities and disputes.
