Sandra Milo (born Salvatrice Elena Greco on 11 March 1933 in Tunis, French Tunisia) was an Italian actress, singer, author, television personality and musician whose career spanned six decades. She entered the cinematic world in 1955 opposite Alberto Sordi in The Bachelor, and quickly became a popular face in comedies and melodramas of the late‑1950s. Her breakthrough came with Roberto Rossellini’s General della Rovere (1959), a role secured by producer Moris Ergas, whom she later married. During the early 1960s she appeared in Vanina Vanini and other prestige projects, but a series of personal choices—most notably her marriage and subsequent retirement—temporarily halted her ascent. Despite a withdrawal from the screen, Milo maintained a public presence as a television hostess in Rome, and her luminous beauty kept her in the public eye, setting the stage for a dramatic revival.  In the mid‑1960s she starred in two of Federico Fellini’s masterpieces, playing the whimsical mistress in 8½ and the ethereal figure in Juliet of the Spirits, performances that earned her two Nastro d’Argento awards for Best Supporting Actress. Although Fellini’s endorsement brought critical acclaim, the films failed to erase the type‑casting that followed, and many subsequent roles were of a secondary nature.  After a second retirement in 1968, Milo returned in 1979, transitioning to more mature, stern characters and establishing herself as a versatile talent in both cinema and theatre.  She toured Italy in 2006–2007 with a theatrical adaptation of 8 Women, demonstrated her lyrical skill on the music stage, and authored several books that reflected on her artistic journey. A devout Roman Catholic, she was the mother of three children—Deborah with Moris Ergas, and Ciro and Azzurra with Ottavio De Lollis. Sandra Milo passed away from lung cancer on 29 January 2024 in Rome, aged 90, leaving a legacy marked by elegance, resilience, and a distinctive contribution to Italian cultural life.
