Rosina May Lawrence was born on December 30, 1912, in Westboro, Nepean Township, Ontario, Canada, and became a notable figure in Hollywood's golden age despite a relatively brief career in the spotlight. Her family relocated to Boston in 1922 before settling in California, where a tragic 1925 playground accident left her paralyzed on her left side. Rather than succumbing to disability, Lawrence embraced dancing as prescribed therapy to strengthen her weakened leg, eventually becoming one of the first women to swim across Lake Tahoe in Nevada. This determination translated into professional success when she began working as a dancing double for Sally Eilers in the film Dance Team, subsequently serving as Eilers' stand-in and securing dancing roles in various productions. After making her film debut in 1924's A Lady of Quality, she signed with Twentieth Century-Fox in 1935, appearing in comedies like $10 Raise and taking on the ingenue role in Charlie Chan's Secret, though her work there remained relatively undistinguished compared to her later achievements.

Her career truly flourished when Fox loaned her to comedy producer Hal Roach, leading to her becoming a fixture at the Roach studio where she worked alongside comedy legends including Charley Chase, Patsy Kelly, Jack Haley, and most notably Laurel and Hardy. Lawrence achieved her greatest recognition portraying the schoolteacher in the beloved Our Gang comedies between 1936 and 1937, bringing warmth and charm to the series. Her musical talents emerged prominently in the classic feature Way Out West (1937), where she not only performed her own vocals but also provided the high soprano notes for Stan Laurel during the famous "Trail of the Lonesome Pine" duet. Unlike many starlets of her era, Lawrence displayed little interest in the manufactured publicity stunts orchestrated by studio press agents, earning respect from the easygoing Roach staff for her authentic approach to her craft. In June 1939, she married Judge Juvenal P. Marchisio and gracefully retired from acting to embrace domestic life, remaining absent from screens for decades until a surprising cameo in the 1972 Italian comedy Lost, where she played an American film star. Following Marchisio's death in 1973, she found love again with John C. McCabe, a noted biographer of her former co-stars Laurel and Hardy, whom she married in 1987. She passed away from cancer on June 23, 1997, in New York City at age 84, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by the Nepean Museum through exhibits of memorabilia and retrospective screenings of her work.
