On a slow school day, Spanky and Alfalfa hatch a mischievous plan after Alfalfa pens a note to Spanky. In the note, they warn that Buckwheat and Porky have firecrackers and beg Spanky to think of a way to relieve them of their stash. The note makes its way to Spanky by way of a simple paper airplane, and when recess arrives, the two boys corner Buckwheat and Porky with an offer: trade a magnifying glass and a water pistol for the firecrackers. When Buckwheat and Porky decline, the duo doubles down on their scheme by disguising themselves as adults—borrowing the janitor’s clothes and, with Spanky perched on Alfalfa’s shoulders, even shaving off Alfalfa’s cowlick to fashion a makeshift mustache. The moment ends with Alfalfa blithely protesting, “I’m ruined!” as the ruse comes to life.

Daring the breakout even further, the improvised adults attempt a quick escape, but their cover is compromised. Spanky discards the disguise and tries to light the firecrackers with his magnifying glass, only to have Buckwheat strike back by sneaking into the classroom and ringing the bell, abruptly ending recess. In the frenzy, Alfalfa stuffs the firecrackers into his back pocket while Porky, ever watchful, picks up Spanky’s discarded magnifying glass, leaving the misfit scheme dangerously exposed.

Back in class, Miss Lawrence Miss Lawrence asks the children to recite their assignments, and only Alfalfa steps up to the plate. He begins his recitation of “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” and the moment becomes chaotic as the magnifying glass focuses sunlight onto Alfalfa’s back pocket, triggering the firecrackers. The classroom erupts in a spectacle of smoke and heat as Alfalfa, mid-poem, zigzags around with his rear ablaze. He races outside into a washtub of cold water, steam bursting from the heated bath as the water boils at the heat. He dunks his scorched rear over and over, the sensation oddly comforting despite the humiliation. With his eyes half-closed and his mouth agape, he remains in the tub a moment too long, savoring the cooling relief, even as the rest of the class stares in a mix of shock and laughter. The scene lingers on the ridiculous sight—the heat, the steam, and the slapstick splashing—before the camera slowly pans away, and the laughter of the students fades into the fading screen.
