On the first day of school, the kids stand on the steps with long faces, brimming with nerves about the new term. Spanky George McFarland and Alfalfa Carl Switzer hatch a playful scheme to dodge class: Alfalfa pretends he has a toothache, going so far as to stuff a balloon in his mouth to sell the ruse.

Enter Miss Lawrence Rosina Lawrence, the new teacher who overhears the plan and decides to turn it into a little surprise for the class. Instead of scolding, she orders ice cream for everyone, hoping to start the term on a sweet note.
