Oskar Homolka: Movies & Box Office

Oskar Homolka (August 12, 1898 – January 27, 1978) was a prolific Austrian film and theatre actor, with an illustrious career that spanned multiple nations including Germany, Britain, and America. Recognized for his distinctive voice and appearance, Homolka was often cast as communist spies or Soviet officials. By 30, he had already appeared in over 400 stage plays, while his film career encompassed over 100 films and TV shows. His exceptional performance in the movie I Remember Mama (1948) earned him a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. After serving in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I, Homolka honed his acting skills at the Imperial Academy of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna. He launched his career on the Austrian stage, working under renowned director Max Reinhardt in Berlin from 1925. He starred in numerous stage plays and made at least 30 silent films in Germany. In 1936, Homolka moved to Britain due to the rise of the Nazi party in Germany and later relocated to the US. Throughout his career, he worked with notable actors including Sylvia Sidney, Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Reagan, and Katharine Hepburn. In his later years, he returned to England and appeared in television shows including Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Hazel. He spent his last years in Britain, passing away from pneumonia in 1978.
